The flowing coat of Persian Cats requires a protected indoor environment. This breed is relatively difficult to groom: it needs daily brushing to avoid mats and tangles. An occasional bath once a month with prior brushing is enough to keep the coat clean and healthy and reduce shedding.
Some owners shave the cat's rear-end area or shave the entire cat each summer. It's fine for the coat, which grows back thicker and darker. If you bring a kitten to your house, first limit your Persian cat to one room so that it can adapt to the environment change. If you have other pets, it's better to introduce them gradually.
Persian Cats - Health
The flat form of the face may cause eye drainage problems, which can create a build-up of residue. The eyes of Persian Cats require daily cleaning with a wet cloth. If the eyes are goopy, it indicates an eye infection, cold, or viral infection. You should take the cat to the vet in these cases.
As for genetically based diseases, Persian Cats may suffer of Polycyclic Kidney Disease (PKD) and dystocia (difficulty giving birth), which are more common among Persian Cats than other breeds. Such cats should be excluded from the breeding program. Also Persian Cats are prone to upper respiratory infections and abnormalities of the oral and nasal cavities.
